![]() ![]() The play should be between zero and 0.050 millimeter vertically. most king pin sets supply only one size but VW had 10 different ones as service parts Vertical play which is controlled by the fiber washer. There are two major measurements wrt the king pin. There are some critical measurements for installing king and linkpins succesfully. do not over tighten the link pin.ĭo not forget to pump them full of grease before driving off. Now re assemble in the reverse of stripping.īefore tightening the bolt holding the link pins to the torsion arms, fit spanner to the flats on the link pins, and turn till the link pin seats snug up to the torsion arm. Grease and fit the link pins, with the correct number of shims on each side of the link pin before pushing them into the bushes. The reamer is now used to align the two bushes by cutting the sightly smaller bore, to the correct 18 mm needed for the king pin, into a strait line, even if the knuckle is bent.Ĭlean away the filings, and grease the king pin, slide home and heat the knuckle again, line up the hole in the link pin bush side with the grease nipple hole and press in with the vice, homing it with a socket or the old bush.ĭo all 4 ensuring that they are fully home. Now this is the only thing you may have a problem with, you need a 18 mm parallel reamer, should you opt to buy one, they about R380, or you may lend one from some one, or have an Engineering shop ream them for you. Heat the knuckle, ( I use a plumbers gas torch) place a little grease on the outside of the brass bush, and tap it lightly into the knuckle, now quickly transfer the thing to the vice and press the bush home, you may need that socket again. ![]() The King pin bushes are a brass type, so when you have heated the knuckle, an are ready to tap out the king pin bushes, drop a ice block on the bush, it will melt, and slide inside, cooling the bush just in time to tap it out.Īfter cleaning, the re-assembly is a lot easier if you have a vice. Now you tap out the king pin as you have done with the link pin bushes. You may have to reheat the knuckle a few times as you go along. Now heat up the hole knuckle, and when grease melting hot, tap out the link pin bushes. You need a bar or socket that is the correct size that will force out the bush with out messing up[ the seat. Now you have to remove the link pin bushes. To protect the grease nipples, remove, clean and store them. You will notice that there are shims on both sides of the link pin mounting of either side of the torsion arm, count them and make a note of how many are on each side at the top as well as at the bottom, you need to replace the new ones in the same number when re assembling. Now tap the link pins out of the torsion arms, alternating between the upper & lower till it is out. Loosen and remove the bolts holding the link pins in place in the upper and lower torsion arms. Now unbolt the back plate with all the brake components still intact, and slide it off the Stub Axle. Remove the drum, with bearings, needless to say, clean all parts as you remove them, and I always pack then on the work bench, or floor as they come out, this will help the bad memory, in getting them back the way they should be. The lock nuts may now be removed, being careful to turn in the correct direction as the two axles have left and right threads. Set your car on stands with the front end in the air, as you would have to do both sides. These are so inexpensive and as you are doing all this work, you may as well do it all one time. You may also want to replace the wheel bearings at the same time, as well as the grease seal in the drum. Also get a pair of locking plates, as the old ones will not work correctly ever again. I got my set of King pins & Link Pins from Goldwagen, but there are many suppliers. (you have to first see if its not your wheel bearings.) This is very easy to find out, all you do is jack up the one front wheel, and grasp the tyre at 12 o'clock and at 6 o'clock,Īnd see-saw the wheel in and out, if you can move it, you need to replace them. Had to do the 56 Oval King & Link pins, as the old ones where shot. ![]()
